In 2021, as a response to the pandemic’s closure of school sites across Patna, India, the Schools2030 team worked in consultation with the local community and followed a Human-Centred Design (HCD) process to create Community Libraries, which the local people call ‘Kiosks’.

Now, several years on from lockdown, residents are using and maintaining the libraries thanks to local demand for learning spaces outside of traditional school sites. The libraries stand as a testament to the power of HCD – because ideas are designed with community participation, they are often more relevant, desirable and sustainable.

We want more libraries like this to open in other communities as well, so that children can have more opportunities and spaces to learn.
